Week 2: Print Culture & Publishing

  1. I was talking with a colleague of mine (who has her PhD) about publishing dissertations online and from her perspective the concern is about being scooped. A researcher publishing work online prior to getting it published in a Journal could possibly result in having their work published in a Journal by another group or person before they do. However, on the other hand when it comes to publishing, speed is important. Delays by editors and referees for Journal publishing may result in competitors publishing similar work before one can publish their own. Online publishing could possibly limit this as it would at least put the work out there, and one could prove they did it first… but would this type of work be considered official and of high quality?
